Litigation continues against Gross Dam Reservoir Expansion Project

Save the Colorado, The Environmental Group, WildEarth Guardians, Sierra Club, Waterkeeper Alliance, and Living Rivers/Colorado Riverkeeper remain in litigation against Denver Water to stop the expansion of Gross Reservoir for reasons that the permit application, and especially the climate modeling for the environmental review, does not properly consider the cumulative impacts that global warming has, and will continue to have, on the natural environment.

This is a trans-basin water diversion project from the Colorado River Basin. Since Year 2000 the 30-year average for the Colorado River has decreased by 2.4 million acre-feet. The demand for Colorado River water exceeded the natural supply in Year 2003.

Water curtailments in the Colorado River Basin officially begin on January 1, 2022 and the two-year projection indicate that the curtailments will triple in magnitude in 2023.
